Short answer

170 US small business grant programs are verifiably open today, November 3, 2026. That breaks into two groups: 111 rolling programs that accept applications year-round with no fixed cutoff (the Amber Grant for Women and the HerRise MicroGrant, plus 67 state-level training-and-innovation funds), and 59 programs with a published deadline that hasn't passed yet — of which 42 close within the next 60 days. “Open” here means the program's status is active in our catalog and its deadline is either rolling or dated on or after today; it does not guarantee funds remain available, since some first-come programs close early when their budget runs out.

How we built this. Days-until-close is measured from November 3, 2026. A program counts as “closing soon” only if it has a specific published deadlineDate in our catalog within the next 60 days — cyclical programs with a described-but-undated future round (e.g. “opens again in fall”) are excluded from this list until a specific date is published, even though they may reopen sooner.

Grants of $50,000 or more: government cost share or private prize

Short answer: most small business grants with a top award of $50,000 or more come from federal, state and city programs, and only a handful of companies and private foundations give that much. The two work differently. A government grant of that size usually pays for a defined project, such as research, worker training, a storefront or export costs, and often covers a share of money you spend first. A private grant of that size is usually one competitive prize paid as cash.

Worked example: what a $500,000 cost-share grant asks of you

RISE PA's Small Award Track for Pennsylvania manufacturers covers 50% of project costs, up to $500,000. To receive the full $500,000, a manufacturer has to run a $1,000,000 project and fund the other $500,000 itself. WorkInvestNH works the same way for training: it reimburses half the cost, from $750 to $100,000. Most Baltimore Facade Improvement Grants are a 1:1 match paid as a reimbursement after the work. Before you chase a big number, check two things: whether you can carry the spending until the money comes back, and whether the award goes to businesses at all. The EDA Revolving Loan Fund, for example, pays the loan fund operator, which then lends to businesses.

How grants from banks work, and how to apply for one

Short answer: banks, credit unions and card issuers do fund small business grants, but most run one short window a year, often through a partner organization, so the usual way in is to watch for the window rather than to apply year-round. The Federal Home Loan Bank grants work differently: a business cannot apply on its own and has to go through a member bank, so the first step is asking your own bank whether it takes part.

Three ways to get a bank grant

  1. Ask your bank about the next Federal Home Loan Bank round. For its 2026 program, FHLBank of New York said its “members will be able to provide grants of up to $10,000”; Elevate grants from FHLBank Indianapolis are also requested through a member bank, so a bank that takes part can tell you when the next round opens.
  2. Get on the partner's list. Main Street America announces new Backing Small Businesses rounds to its email list, not on a fixed calendar.
  3. Plan for spring. The American Express historic restaurant grants and Santander's Cultivate Small Business both start their rounds in spring.

How “open now” is defined, and what it isn't

A program counts as open on this page only if its GrantCompass catalog status is active and one of two things is true: it accepts applications on a rolling, year-round, or continuous basis (111 programs), or it has a published deadline on or after November 3, 2026 (59 programs). We excluded 24 active grant-type programs whose next intake is described only in general terms (“opens next spring,” “quarterly, dates vary”) without a specific tracked date, and 0 more whose last tracked deadline has passed without a new round being published — they may well reopen, but we won't claim “open now” for a program without a concrete open window. 18 of the 170 open programs publish no numeric award ceiling (formula- or payroll-based awards); they still count toward the totals here and appear in your full match report.

The numbers behind “open now”

Of the 795 US funding programs in the GrantCompass catalog, 466 are structured as grants (as opposed to loans, tax credits, or other program types). 194 of those 466 grant programs are currently active, and 170 of the 194 are verifiably open today by the definition above.

Monthly and quarterly microgrants: how the rounds work

Short answer: most private microgrants of about $10,000 or less pick winners in repeating rounds, monthly, quarterly or a few times a year, so missing one cutoff usually costs you weeks, not a year. The rule that matters is whether your entry carries over to the next round, and funders answer that differently.

Does your entry carry over?

Apply to a monthly grant in the month you find it: the cutoff is never more than a few weeks away. For quarterly and twice-yearly grants, read the carry-over rule first. The Secretsos Small Business Grant says applications do not roll over, so an entry has to be redone for the next quarter. The Business Freedom Grant says entries “submitted during earlier review periods that are not selected may remain eligible for consideration during the final judging period,” so applying in an early review round gives one application two chances.

Which microgrants are taking applications, with current cutoffs: microgrants open now

The SBA does not give grants to start or grow a business

Short answer: there is no SBA grant application for an ordinary small business. The SBA's own grants page says it “does not provide grants for starting and expanding a business.” Federal grant money reaches most small businesses through two narrower doors: research grants (SBIR and STTR) for companies doing R&D, and export grants that the SBA funds and each state hands out (STEP).

RouteWho it is forAward the funder setsHow it runs
SBIR and STTR research grantsSmall businesses doing research and development for a federal agencyNSF Phase I up to $305,000; NIH Phase I up to $323,090; DoD Phase I up to $250,000; EPA Phase I up to $100,000Each agency runs its own solicitations: NSF asks for a short Project Pitch first, NIH has three standard due dates a year, EPA issues one solicitation a year
STEP export grantsSmall businesses starting or growing exportsCalifornia STEP: up to $10,000 per federal fiscal year, as a 75% reimbursementThe SBA funds the states; you apply to your state's trade office
SBA grants to organizationsNonprofits, SBA Resource Partners and educational organizationsSet per programYour business gets free counseling and training through them, not cash

A “free SBA grant application” is a warning sign

Offers that promise SBA or other government grant money to any business match the scam pattern the Federal Trade Commission describes:

“Offers of free money from government grants are scams.”Federal Trade Commission, Government Grant Scams
  1. Check that the offer leads to the funder's own site: a .gov agency, or the company or foundation that pays the grant.
  2. Never pay to apply for a government grant or to buy a list of them. The FTC says no government agency will contact you to demand payment for a grant.
  3. Expect a real program to name its rules: who can apply, the award, and a deadline or review schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Are any small business grants open right now?

Yes. As of November 3, 2026, 170 of the 466 grant-type programs in the GrantCompass catalog are verifiably open — meaning their status is active and they either accept applications on a rolling, year-round basis (111 programs) or have a published deadline that has not yet passed (59 programs). Examples you can apply to today include the Amber Grant for Women (Three $15,000 grants monthly + three $75,000 year-end, rolling), the Rhode Island Innovation Voucher Program (up to $75,000, closes November 3, 2026), and the SBIR Phase II — NSF (America's Seed Fund) (up to $1.25M, closes November 4, 2026). This list updates monthly; always confirm the current deadline on the program's own page before applying, since a small number of cyclical programs reopen on dates GrantCompass cannot predict.

What grants close this month?

25 programs on this list close before the end of November 2026: the Rhode Island Innovation Voucher Program (up to $75,000, November 3, 2026); the SBIR Phase II — NSF (America's Seed Fund) (up to $1.25M, November 4, 2026); the SBIR Phase I — NSF (America's Seed Fund) (up to $305K, November 4, 2026); the STTR Phase I — NSF (up to $305,000, November 4, 2026). 16 more close in December 2026. See the “closing in the next 60 days” list above for all 42 programs with a near-term deadline, sorted soonest first.
