Grants for Women of Color — November 2026

103 US funding programs in the GrantCompass catalog are open to a woman of color — but only 8 of them are written specifically for women of color, and only 3 of those 8 are accepting applications today. That gap is the whole story of this page. Below, every program is sorted into four honest tiers — explicitly for women of color, women-and-minority priority, general women’s programs you are eligible for but not targeted by, and minority or tribal capital that is not women-specific — with its real status as of November 3, 2026: 65 open, 20 between intakes, 8 paused or ended for good.

Closing next: Sephora Beauty Grant (November 6, 2026), Montana Tribal Tourism Small Business Grant (November 30, 2026), Secretsos Small Business Grant (December 31, 2026). Full countdown below.

Four tiers, status-verified — filter the 103

Every one of the 103 programs below is sorted into a tier by how directly it is aimed at women of color, and stamped with the status we verified on November 3, 2026. Tier 1 names women of color in its eligibility rules. Tier 2 is a women-and-minority program — you are a named priority, not the only audience. Tier 3 is a general women’s program: open to you, not targeted at you. Tier 4 is minority or tribal capital that is not women-specific at all, mostly CDFI lending. Program names link to the GrantCompass page for that program, where the eligibility detail lives.

Apply-Ready

Applying this month? We'll draft it with you.

For these seventeen grants (six of them only for women-owned businesses), answer a few short questions once and we draft your application from what you tell us: only your facts, with a blank wherever the judges want a detail only you know. You submit it yourself.

You see a free preview first and pay only if you want the full draft: $9 per grant. You can add the other month-end grants you qualify for at $5 each (never more than $15 extra).

What these applications actually ask

Quick answer

We read the live application forms for eighteen private essay grants. Most ask the same three things: what your business is, why it matters to you, and exactly how you would spend the money. The shortest is the HerRise MicroGrant (two answers of up to 250 characters each); the longest is the Tory Burch Foundation Fellows Program (eight written questions). Entry fees run from nothing (Business Freedom Grant) to $25.

Which of these close next

One of the eighteen closes on November 6, 2026: Sephora Beauty Grant. After that, the Business Freedom Grant has a review round closing November 15, 2026 and a final deadline of December 31, 2026; the Tory Burch Foundation Fellows Program closes November 17, 2026; the Amber Grant for Women closes November 30, 2026; the Freed Fellowship Grant closes November 30, 2026; the HerRise MicroGrant closes November 30, 2026; the Hey Helen Grant closes November 30, 2026; the IFW Startup Accelerator Grant closes November 30, 2026; the YippityDoo Big Idea Grant closes November 30, 2026; the Hiring Our Heroes Small Business Grant closes December 15, 2026; the Outta Excuses Small Business Empowerment Grant closes December 31, 2026; the SecretSoS Small Business Grant closes December 31, 2026; the Her Agenda Breakthrough Grant closes January 19, 2027. Hustler's MicroGrant: Applications open monthly (no published closing date). Awesome Foundation Micro-Grant: Rolling; most chapters choose a project each month. Thiel Fellowship: Rolling: applications are accepted year round. Each link opens that grant’s page with the draft form ready.

What each form asks, shortest application first. The question wording for each grant is on its own page, and a dash means we found no hard cap on the form.

Two things follow from the table. A short form is not an easy one: a 250-character limit leaves room for one or two sentences, so every word has to carry a fact. And four of the eighteen publish point or percentage weights, which differ from funder to funder, so read them before deciding where to spend your words.

GrantCompass drafts all eighteen of these applications from your own answers: four short questions, a free preview with no card, and $9 for the full draft. We use only what you tell us, and you submit it yourself on the funder’s form. Start from the box above, or read how the drafting works.

Tier 1: the 8 programs written specifically for women of color

Quick answer

8 programs in the GrantCompass catalog name women of color in their eligibility rules, and 3 of them are accepting applications as of September 3, 2026. The three open ones are the HerRise MicroGrant, digitalundivided’s BREAKTHROUGH cohort grant, and Hot Bread Kitchen’s free HBK Incubates program in New York City. Two are between annual intakes, one closed its 2026 cohort in May, and two have ended: the Fearless Fund Strivers Grant permanently, and the SoGal Black Founder Startup Grant to a dead page.

How a program earns Tier 1. The program’s own published eligibility must name women of color, or name a race or ethnicity together with women — “Black and Latina women founders,” “women of color,” “Latina-owned.” A program that serves mostly women of color in practice but writes its rules for “underrepresented founders” is Tier 2, not Tier 1. We do not upgrade a program on the basis of who its past winners were.

Which dedicated program fits you: Black, Latina, Asian American or Indigenous founders

Quick answer

Match on the written rules, not on the program’s reputation. Most of the programs women of color search for by name now define eligibility around a wider group (under-resourced women, underrepresented founders, multicultural entrepreneurs) and name women of color inside it. So the facts that decide whether you fit are usually your revenue, what you sell and where you live, not your ethnicity alone.

The table below reads each program’s own eligibility wording and its hard gates. Answer the four questions and each row is marked as a fit, a maybe, or not a fit, with the reason. Nothing you pick leaves this page.

Check your fit

Pick your answers to mark each program. *The 13 Southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia.

How we built this. Days-until-close is measured from November 3, 2026. A program appears here only if it has a specific published deadline date within 90 days. Programs whose next round is described but not dated (“annually in the spring,” “next cohort TBA”) are deliberately excluded, even though several of them may reopen sooner than the ones listed here.

Where the money for women of color actually is in 2026

Quick answer

The money has moved from big branded prizes to small rolling microgrants and to lending. Of the 103 programs on this page, 60 are capital — CDFI loans, tribal loan funds, state credit-enhancement programs — and 29 of the grant-shaped programs are either between intakes or shut. The reliable money is now $1,000 to $5,000, repeatable, and rarely advertised.

Three distinct pools exist, and they behave differently. Corporate and brand microgrants — Sephora, Glossier, Tarte, Visa, PepsiCo — run once a year, award between $10,000 and $100,000, and attract tens of thousands of applicants. 21 of the 103 programs on this page sit in exactly this state right now: real, funded, and closed until their next annual window. Foundation microgrants — HerRise, Amber, Galaxy, Secretsos — award $1,000 to $2,500 on a monthly or quarterly cycle, which means a founder can enter them twelve or four times a year instead of once. Public and quasi-public capital — CDFIs, SSBCI-funded state programs, tribal loan funds — is by far the largest pool by dollars: 52 of these are lending today, and unlike the grants they do not close.

If your business is built around social justice, the TRANSFORM microgrant screens on values and need rather than revenue.

The 2023–2024 legal challenges reshaped the top of this market rather than the bottom. Large, explicitly race-conditioned grant programs became legally exposed; the Fearless Fund Strivers Grant closed permanently in a September 2024 settlement, and Black Ambition suspended its Prize Competition for 2026. Small foundation microgrants and CDFI lending were untouched. A founder optimising for expected dollars in 2026 should therefore work the repeatable small grants and the lenders, and treat the annual brand prizes as lottery tickets she buys once a year when the window opens.

The rolling monthlies: the only programs you can enter more than once a year

Quick answer

64 of the 103 programs on this page have no fixed deadline at all, and a handful of those reset every month or every quarter — which turns a single application into a repeatable habit rather than a one-shot bet.

The HerRise MicroGrant issues $1,000 every month to an under-resourced woman-owned small business, including women of color (51% women-owned); applications close at 11:59pm ET on the last day of each month and the winner is announced at HerSuiteSpot’s First Friday mixer. The Amber Grant, run by WomensNet, awards three $15,000 grants every month plus three $75,000 year-end grants drawn from the monthly winners, on the same last-day-of-month cadence. The Women Founders Grant awards $5,000 in posted rounds with a $25 application fee; its October 31, 2026 deadline has passed and no new one is posted. The Secretsos Small Business Grant awards $2,500 each quarter to owners who have been turned down for bank credit, closing on the last day of each quarter — next, December 31, 2026 — for a $15 fee. The Galaxy Grant awards $2,500 and is free to apply to, with a 30-second form; its October 31, 2026 round has closed and the next is not announced.

Treat these as a calendar, not a task list. One evening a month spent refreshing the same three or four applications is a materially better use of time than hunting for new programs, because the population of programs written for women of color is small and slow-moving — 8 in a catalog of 665 US funding programs — while the number of chances to enter the rolling ones is unlimited. Star them in the GrantCompass database and the deadline reminder arrives without you tracking it.

A 12-month application plan for women of color founders

Quick answer

Enter HerRise every month, enter the Amber Grant every third month, and take each annual brand round once when it opens. The Amber Grant’s system blocks a second application from the same email for 3 months, so four Amber entries a year is the ceiling. That plan costs $240 a year in entry fees for 16 chances.

ProgramEntries a yearFee eachFees a yearAward per win
HerRise MicroGrant12$15$180$1,000
Amber Grant4 (3-month email lock)$15$60$15,000Monthly winners are in the running for three $75,000 year-end grants
Both monthly programs16 $240

Reuse one core application. HerRise asks for two answers of up to 250 characters; Amber’s form asks for longer written answers. Write the long version once for Amber and cut it down for HerRise, then refresh the numbers each month rather than starting over. Neither program promises a set number of entries before a win, so treat the $240 as a budget you choose, not an investment with a return.

Worked example

A Black woman in Georgia runs a skincare brand with $120,000 in annual sales, three years old. On the rules above she fits the Sephora Beauty Grant (a beauty product, past $100,000, more than a year trading), the NAACP × L’Oréal fund (a beauty business), the Dream Investment Program (Georgia is one of its 13 states and the brand is 2 to 5 years old), HerRise (under $1 million) and Amber. Her year: 16 monthly entries for $240, plus three annual applications when their rounds open, and digitalundivided BREAKTHROUGH if a cohort lands within 100 miles of her.

Work the full database, not a list

This page is one slice. The GrantCompass database holds all 665 US programs with what is actually true about each one — type, level, status, deadline, amount, and who it is really for. Filter it to women-focused programs that are open right now, star what fits, and we watch the deadlines for you. That part is free, and it is what a list on a blog can never do.

Open the database →

Programs that paused, closed, or got sued — what actually changed

Quick answer

25 of the 43 women-focused programs on this page are not accepting applications right now — between annual intakes, closed for the cycle, or ended for good. Aggregator lists still show most of them as live, which is the single most expensive thing a founder can be wrong about.

The Fearless Fund Strivers Grant is gone permanently. The $20,000 grant for Black women-owned businesses was suspended by a federal appeals panel in June 2024 and then terminated outright in a September 2024 settlement with the American Alliance for Equal Rights; the settlement bars the contest from operating and it will not reopen. The Fearless Fund itself continues as an investor. Black Ambition is not running its Prize Competition in 2026. Pharrell Williams’ organisation states on its own application page that it is “entering a new phase of impact in 2026” and will not accept new Prize applications, focusing instead on founders already in its portfolio. Comcast RISE has effectively wound down: comcastrise.com now redirects to Comcast’s Project UP page, and no 2026 application window has been published. The SoGal Black Founder Startup Grant has no live page. Eileen Fisher’s women-owned business grant and Stacy’s Rise Project are both dormant, with no verified cycle in recent years, despite appearing on dozens of “grants for women” listicles.

One more category deserves naming, because it wastes the most time: programs that fund organisations rather than founders. Mastercard Strive USA, the MBDA Capital Readiness Program, the MBDA Women’s Entrepreneurship Program and the Treasury’s Native American CDFI Assistance program all award money — to nonprofits, CDFIs and intermediaries who then serve small businesses. An individual business cannot apply to any of them for its own operations. They are marked on this page so you do not spend an afternoon finding that out.

How race-specific grants changed after the Fearless Fund case

Quick answer

A private grant contest that admits only one race is now a legal risk in the US, so the programs still running for women of color write their rules around a wider group and name women of color inside it. For a founder that cuts both ways: you can enter programs once described as Black-women-only, and so can more applicants, so the essay has to win on the judging criteria.

June 3, 2024The Eleventh Circuit, 2 votes to 1, orders a preliminary injunction against the Fearless Strivers Grant Contest. Judge Rosenbaum dissented.
September 11, 2024The parties settle and the Fearless Fund permanently closes the $20,000 Strivers grant contest.
Binding reachThe ruling binds federal courts in Alabama, Florida and Georgia, and it addressed grant contests, not venture investing.

The case was American Alliance for Equal Rights v. Fearless Fund Management (11th Cir. No. 23-13138). The court did not treat the grant as a gift. The contest’s official rules told entrants the rules were a contract, and a federal law from 1866, 42 U.S.C. § 1981, bars private parties from discriminating by race when they make contracts. The majority found the contest, which was open only to Black women, “substantially likely to violate § 1981” and “substantially unlikely to enjoy First Amendment protection,” because it categorically barred everyone else. The Alliance told NPR it had urged the Fund to open the contest to Hispanic, Asian, Native American and white women; the Fund ended it instead. Fearless Fund’s lawyer called the settlement “very narrow”: its investing and other charitable work continue.

What the programs still running say about who can apply

ProgramIts own wordingWhat that means for you
HerRise MicroGrantunder-resourced women, including women of colorAny woman meeting the gates can enter; women of color are named, not required.
BGV Foundationunder-resourced multicultural entrepreneursThe old Black Girl Ventures name now sits on a broader foundation whose wording takes in other founders of color; Black and Brown women are still prioritized.
Dream Investment Programcenters Black girls, women, and femme-identifying entrepreneursBuilt for Black women and says so, and it also welcomes applicants from other historically underserved communities.
Sephora Beauty Grantfounders from any other background historically overlooked in venture capital funding, regardless of raceRace is one route in among several, alongside women, immigrants and low-income backgrounds.
NAACP × L’Oréal USA Inclusive Beauty Fundbeauty businesses of all kindsThe public page sets no race or gender rule; the terms and conditions hold the full list.

Three rules for reading eligibility now

  1. “Centers,” “prioritizes” or “including” means the door is open. Apply whatever your background, and write to the program’s mission, because judges still read for it.
  2. A rule that admits one race only is the exception now. Before you spend an evening on it, confirm on the funder’s own page that the round is live; several such contests paused or closed after 2024.
  3. “Underrepresented” is a list, so read the list. Sephora’s names AAPI and Indigenous founders, first-generation immigrants and founders whose parents earned below the poverty line, so more women of color qualify than a headline suggests.

This is a plain reading of the court record and the funders’ pages, not legal advice. The full list of programs that paused or ended sits in the section above.

The numbers behind “grants for women of color”

Of the 795 US funding programs GrantCompass tracks, 103 are usable by a woman of color, 43 are aimed at women in some form, and 8 name women of color explicitly. The tier distribution is the honest shape of this market, and it is not the shape the listicles imply.

The 103 programs by tier

  • Tier 1 — explicitly for women of color 8
  • Tier 2 — women + minority priority 17
  • Tier 3 — general women’s programs 18
  • Tier 4 — minority & tribal capital 60

Methodology. Computed from the GrantCompass verified US catalog of 795 funding programs, extract of November 3, 2026, filtered to every program carrying a women facet or a Black, Latina, Native, Asian or minority tag: n=103. Each program was hand-classified into one of four tiers by reading its published eligibility rules, then status-checked against the program’s own official page on November 3, 2026. “Open” = the program accepts applications on a rolling basis, or has a published deadline on or after November 3, 2026, or was confirmed live on its own site. Median award ceiling uses each program’s published maximum, over the 36 grant, award, fellowship and accelerator programs in tiers 1–3 that publish a numeric ceiling; loans, certifications and free services are excluded from that figure. Where the official source disagreed with our catalog, the official value is what is printed here and the discrepancy is logged for correction.

Every row above carries locked intel

The questions founders actually type

Quick answer

There is no free federal grant for starting a business as a Black woman; the Fearless Fund grant is permanently closed; MBE and WBE certification is a contracting tool, not a grant prerequisite; and the best free program open today is the SBA’s Women’s Business Centers (the free Galaxy Grant is between rounds after closing October 31, 2026).

Are there free government grants for Black women to start a business?

No. The federal government does not award start-up grants to individuals by race or gender, and any site promising one is selling something. What the federal government does offer women of color is free infrastructure and contract access: the SBA’s Women’s Business Centers run roughly 150 nonprofit centers offering free counselling and capital-access help; the WOSB and EDWOSB certifications are free and open federal set-aside contracts; the 8(a) Business Development Program does the same for socially and economically disadvantaged owners. Federal grant dollars aimed at this population flow through intermediaries — MBDA Business Centers and the MBDA Women’s Entrepreneurship Program fund nonprofits, which then serve you for free. The cash grants on this page are private and foundation money, not government money.

What happened to the Fearless Fund grant for Black women?

It is permanently closed. The Fearless Fund Strivers Grant awarded $20,000 to businesses majority-owned by Black women. In June 2024 a federal appeals panel ordered the contest suspended after finding the American Alliance for Equal Rights was likely to prevail in its challenge; in September 2024 the parties settled, and the settlement requires the contest to cease. It will not reopen. The Fearless Fund and its foundation continue their other investment and charitable work — the settlement was written narrowly — but the grant contest itself is over. The practical consequence for founders is that lists still ranking it as a live opportunity are stale, and the closest still-running substitutes are the HerRise MicroGrant and the digitalundivided BREAKTHROUGH grant, both an order of magnitude smaller.

Do I need MBE or WBE certification to apply for these grants?

No. Not one of the 8 Tier 1 programs on this page requires a minority or women’s business certification, and neither do the microgrants in Tier 2 and Tier 3. Private grants ask you to self-attest ownership — usually 51% or more — and to supply formation documents and sometimes a tax return. Certification earns its keep somewhere else entirely: winning contracts. Federal set-asides need the free SBA WOSB or 8(a) certification; state and city procurement needs a state MBE or WBE certificate; large corporate supplier-diversity programs need a third-party certification such as WBENC or NMSDC. If your growth plan is contracts, certify. If your growth plan is grants, certification is a distraction that costs weeks.

Which programs for women of color have no application fee?

Application fees are common in this segment and worth checking before you start. The Galaxy Grant is explicitly free to apply to — the form takes about 30 seconds, though its October 31, 2026 round has closed and the next is not announced. The SBA Women’s Business Centers, Hot Bread Kitchen’s HBK Incubates and Operation HOPE’s 1MBB are free programs rather than fee-gated competitions. By contrast, the Women Founders Grant charges a $25 non-refundable fee, and the Secretsos Small Business Grant charges $15. A fee is not automatically a red flag — small foundations use it to filter bots and cover review costs — but it changes the arithmetic of applying to the same $1,000 grant twelve times a year.

Frequently asked questions

What grants are available for Black women business owners right now?

As of September 3, 2026, three programs written specifically for women of color are accepting applications: the HerRise MicroGrant ($1,000 every month, applications close 11:59pm ET on the last day of each month), digitalundivided's BREAKTHROUGH cohort grant ($5,000 per company, currently recruiting in Northern California and Nashville), and Hot Bread Kitchen's HBK Incubates in New York City (a free food-business incubator with rolling admissions rather than a cash grant). Beyond those three, Black women founders are eligible for the wider women-and-minority tier: the Galaxy Grant ($2,500, free to apply; its October 31, 2026 round has closed and the next is not announced), the Secretsos Small Business Grant ($2,500 a quarter, next cut-off December 31, 2026) and the Antares REACH Grant (up to $20,000, rolling). Two of the best-known Black-women programs are gone: the Fearless Fund Strivers Grant closed permanently under a September 2024 settlement, and Black Ambition is not running its Prize Competition in 2026.

Are there grants for Latina entrepreneurs in 2026?

Yes, but the count is small and most run on annual cycles. digitalundivided's BREAKTHROUGH grant awards $5,000 to Black and Latina women founders and is recruiting cohorts now. PepsiCo's Juntos Crecemos Jefa-Owned Business Grant awards $10,000 to twenty Latina-owned food and beverage businesses each year and is between intakes. The PepsiCo Greenhouse Accelerator Juntos Crecemos track ($20,000 plus a grand prize) is also between intakes. Latina founders in the Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia area can borrow from LEDC, a CDFI built for Latino and immigrant business owners, on a rolling basis. GrantCompass tracks 103 programs on this page that a woman of color can use; 8 of them are written specifically for women of color and 60 are minority or tribal capital programs open to her without being women-specific.

Do women-of-color grants require a certification?

No. None of the eight programs written specifically for women of color requires a minority or women's business certification. Certification matters for a different activity: winning government and corporate contracts. The SBA's Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) and Economically Disadvantaged WOSB certifications are free and open set-aside federal contracts; the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program does the same for socially and economically disadvantaged owners. Private grants such as the Amber Grant, the Galaxy Grant and the HerRise MicroGrant ask you to self-attest ownership, usually at 51% or more, and to supply formation documents. Treat certification as a contracting tool, not a grant prerequisite.

What's open this month for women of color?

The next dated window is the Secretsos Small Business Grant ($2,500 quarterly), whose Q4 window runs to December 31, 2026. The Galaxy Grant ($2,500, free to apply) closed its round on October 31, 2026 and has not announced the next one. The Montana Indian Equity Fund ($40,000 for Native-owned Montana businesses) closed its 2026 window on September 30 and has not yet dated the next one. The DivInc Startup Accelerator's August 23 cohort window has closed, with its next cohort dates not yet posted, and the Women Founders Grant ($5,000, $25 application fee) is between rounds: its October 31, 2026 deadline has passed and no new one is posted. Separately, 64 of the 103 programs on this page are rolling with no fixed deadline at all, including the monthly HerRise MicroGrant and the monthly Amber Grant. This page is recomputed and republished monthly.
